David Holmes is a scientist with ten years’ experience across a range of site investigation and remediation designs and techniques on both closed and active sites. He has a background in environmental management and holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Southampton. This involved experiments and modelling of multi-phase flow during aeration of landfills at various scales.

He began his career in 2014 with a remediation contractor, working as a scientist in support of remediation projects and technology development. In 2016, following a project where 160,000 L (42,000 US gallons) of LNAPL were recovered, David led the design and development of a of a novel method of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) monitoring, the LNAPL probe, which won best Science advance at the 2017 UK Brownfield Briefing Award, and UK Spill Innovation award in 2018. He also managed a research and development laboratory, where his efforts were focused on into destructive treatments of Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in water, the use of chemical dosimetry for remediation design and validation, and method development for accurate field-based metals analysis using Xray Fluorescence. In December 2020, he joined Geosyntec where he took an integral role in projects which have included in situ bioremediation of a chlorinated hydrocarbon plume in fractured bedrock, third party reviews for regulators, complex site investigations (including for PFAS), land transaction liability estimations, large-scale NAPL sites and nationally significant nuclear decommissioning projects.

David is the chair of the Society of Brownfield Risk Assessors (SoBRA) NAPL working group and a guest lecturer at the Universities of Portsmouth and Greenwich. He has continued to collaborate with both Universities, where he has supervised thirteen MSc projects to successful completion and secured several research grants. He is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management and a Chartered Scientist.
