MEANING OF FRS

It is very difficult to stay conversant with new technologies – this is mainly due to time constraints coupled with recognized difficulties in gleaning truly useful information from a field of feathers. But it is very important to maintain a functional understanding of the best-available remedial tools and strategies in order to best serve your clients and to effectively differentiate in a competitive environment.

    Tom Hatton

    President and Founder

Tom Hatton is the President and founder of Clean Vapor, a national design-build Vapor Intrusion mitigation company with over 37 years of concentrated focus on understanding buildings and designing and installing VI Mitigation systems. Tom is an expert in the field and a leader with a passion for protecting people from harmful soil-borne carcinogenic contaminants. In 1985, he developed one of the first models to effectively predict the attenuation of soil vapors into homes. His understanding of the relationship between environmental factors, building science, and the forces that drive vapor intrusion makes him an invaluable project asset. Tom is a sought-after speaker and consultant. He has authored multiple technical papers and contributed to codes and standards. Tom’s methodologies and drive to standardize excellence have led to delivering over 11,500 successful radon, vapor intrusion, and methane mitigation systems.

Tom is focused on advancing energy-efficient technology, controls, and the remote management of Vapor Intrusion mitigation Systems. He is the CEO of Vapor Dynamics, the leading VIMS technology patent holder, providing the latest in precision response-driven controls, monitoring, and remote management. Integrating these tools fulfills Tom’s vision for protecting people, saving energy, extending long-term stewardship, preserving site data, and limiting the liabilities associated with Vapor Intrusion.

Tom is a Founding member and President of the Association of Vapor Intrusion Professionals AVIP. His passion for education, elevating standards, and creating a common monolith of excellence throughout the vapor Intrusion community was one of the key factors in the establishment of AVIP.

Clean Vapor is part of the FullTerra family of companies, the nation’s largest provider of Design Build Vapor Intrusion Mitigation services.

    David Holmes

    Environmental Scientist

David Holmes is a scientist with ten years’ experience across a range of site investigation and remediation designs and techniques on both closed and active sites. He has a background in environmental management and holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Southampton. This involved experiments and modelling of multi-phase flow during aeration of landfills at various scales.

He began his career in 2014 with a remediation contractor, working as a scientist in support of remediation projects and technology development. In 2016, following a project where 160,000 L (42,000 US gallons) of LNAPL were recovered, David led the design and development of a of a novel method of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) monitoring, the LNAPL probe, which won best Science advance at the 2017 UK Brownfield Briefing Award, and UK Spill Innovation award in 2018. He also managed a research and development laboratory, where his efforts were focused on into destructive treatments of Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in water, the use of chemical dosimetry for remediation design and validation, and method development for accurate field-based metals analysis using Xray Fluorescence. In December 2020, he joined Geosyntec where he took an integral role in projects which have included in situ bioremediation of a chlorinated hydrocarbon plume in fractured bedrock, third party reviews for regulators, complex site investigations (including for PFAS), land transaction liability estimations, large-scale NAPL sites and nationally significant nuclear decommissioning projects.

David is the chair of the Society of Brownfield Risk Assessors (SoBRA) NAPL working group and a guest lecturer at the Universities of Portsmouth and Greenwich. He has continued to collaborate with both Universities, where he has supervised thirteen MSc projects to successful completion and secured several research grants. He is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management and a Chartered Scientist.
